Justice Yashwant Varma submitted his resignation to the President of India on April 9, 2026. He was earlier transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court when allegations of the recovery of cash from his residence surfaced.

In his resignation letter, he did not mention any specific reason but said that he would step down with immediate effect in “deep anguish.” He took the oath on 5 April 2025 and is still facing an in-house inquiry, due to which removal (impeachment) proceedings could also be initiated against him in Parliament.

In March 2025, a fire allegedly revealed bundles of cash at his Delhi residence. Judicial work was reassigned to him after the incident. In August 2025, Om Birla formed a 3-member panel to investigate this matter. Justice Varma denied all the allegations and said that he never stored cash.

After his resignation, the constitutional immunity he enjoyed could be abolished. If the president accepts the resignation, a criminal case may be registered against him, leading to his arrest.
